Welcome to Roger’s Take on Religion: An Inclusive Perspective

When it comes to defining causes of poverty, San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor has a simple answer – lack of faith.

In response to a question asked at a recent forum, Mayor Taylor said “To me, it’s…. people not being in relationship with their creator and therefore not being in good relationship with their families and their communities and not being productive members of society.”

Is this the case? Is poverty caused by “people not being in relationship with their creator?”

Here’s My Take: The causes of poverty are numerous and complex. Lack of faith is not one of them, however.

Jesus said “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.” (Luke 6:20)

He said, too, “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19:24)

Christianity was founded as a religion of the poor. Like everything else, it’s been taken away from them.
