Welcome to Roger’s Take on Religion: An Inclusive Perspective
Donald Trump recently addressed the graduating class at Liberty University, saying to great applause, “In America, we don’t worship government, we worship God.” Nice line, Donald, but apparently your God and my God are different.
Abraham Joshua Heschel, a Polish-born American rabbi once said “Any God who is mine but not yours, any God concerned with me but not with you, is an idol.”
What does this say about Trump’s God?
Here’s My Take: When either government policies or religious beliefs degrade people in the name of God, we worship idols.
In blaming our problems on others – whether Mexican “rapists” or Muslim “terrorist” refugees – and then saying “we don’t worship government, we worship God,” we defile the very name of the Holy.
All are created in the image of God, not just wealthy white ones.
