NAPPING AT THE VATICAN

Roger’s Take on Religion: An Inclusive Perspective

Now we have the revelation that Pope Francis has been sleeping on the job.

“When I pray, sometimes I fall asleep,” he said in a television interview placed on YouTube.

Like anyone caught napping, he was quick to shift the blame. “Saint Therese did it too,” he said, referring to the widely venerated 19th-century French nun.

If that was not excuse enough, the Pope then said that Christians are called to be “like children lying in their fathers’ arms”– a place conducive to napping, he implied.

Here’s my Take: Two things strike me about the Pope’s response:

  • First, he blames a woman when a more famous example of sleeping is the Apostle John, often portrayed in paintings as sleeping at the Last Supper.
  • When it comes to children, certainly Mary’s cradling of the infant Jesus is a more comforting image than that of “children lying in their father’s arms.”

I like the Pope. He’s warm, he’s human but he sure seems asleep at the helm when it comes to lifting up women.

A bit of a stretch on this Roger. Not a good example. He could do better on lifting up women but then there
is the whole organization he leads .
