“LIKE PLANTING CUT FLOWERS”

Welcome to Roger’s Take on Religion: An Inclusive Perspective

Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, recently said that “America First” means that our values as a nation cannot define our foreign policy. “Our values around freedom, human dignity, the way people are treated – those are our values. Those are not our policies.”

One former State department spokesman responded, “Divorcing our interests from our values … is like trying to plant cut flowers.”

Here’s My Take: Tillerson’s statement represents the heart of Donald Trump’s presidency and the danger Trump represents. Policies, whether domestic or foreign, end up reflecting values, stated or not.

Whether seeking to build a wall, inviting Philippine leader, Rodrigo “The Punisher” Duterte to the White House, or providing precision-guided weapons to Saudi Arabia, “America First” is a euphemism for putting nails in the cross of human dignity.

Cutting the root is to kill the plant.*

*The writer of Proverbs, having met Donald Trump on more than one occasion, offers this hopeful insightA man will not be established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous will not be moved. (12:3)
