Welcome to Roger’s Take on Religion: An Inclusive Perspective
The temptation to sell one’s soul, whether for power, wealth or fame, is nothing new.
In the biblical version, Satan takes Jesus to a mountain top. Looking out, he offers Jesus dominion over the “kingdoms of the world,” an offer seen as one of acquiring political rather than spiritual power.
Today’s soul-selling temptation is similar: Should spiritual leaders bow down before Donald Trump?
Consider the answer by James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family. Dobson made headlines when he announced that Trump had “accepted a relationship with Christ” and was now a “baby Christian,” something Trump has never admitted. On this basis, he has endorsed Trump even though Trump exemplifies everything Focus on the Family opposes.
Dobson has chosen politics over principles. Here, unlike the temptation of Jesus, the devil sealed a deal.
Here’s My Take: Maintaining personal integrity is a challenge. It may be the challenge.
We would all do well in this political season to remember Jesus’ response “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.'” (Matt. 4:10)
