Welcome to Roger’s Take on Religion: An Inclusive Perspective
Not all religion is good religion. In fact, much of it is bad. Take Christianity, for example. Everyone says they believe in Jesus. Which Jesus is that?
Is it the Jesus of the Ku Klux Klan or those seeking racial justice? Is it the Jesus of Islam-fearing Christians or those committed to inter-faith relationships?
As Christian ethicist David Gushee points out, “A faith that stands with the crucified is very different from a faith that does the crucifying.”
Pope Francis’s recent visit to the Greek island of Lesbos to highlight the plight of migrants fleeing to Europe exemplifies “standing with the crucified.” “I want to tell you that you are not alone,” Francis told the refugees, urging them not to lose hope.
Here’s My Take: If you find yourself filled with anger and hatred toward others, you may be sitting in the wrong pew. Following a Jesus that does not lead to increased compassion for the suffering, the poor and the rejected is bad religion.
