Welcome to Roger’s Take on Religion: An Inclusive Perspective
There’s a famous Playboy illustration depicting a fierce battle from the medieval Crusades in which Christians and Muslims are slaughtering each other. Underneath is the biblical admonition, “Love Ye One Another.” That battle still rages.
Pope Francis met last week with Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, in a historic step towards healing the 1,000-year-old divide between Western and Eastern branches of Christianity. While many differences separate the two groups, one issue brought them together – protecting Christians from persecution by Middle Eastern and African Islamic groups.
President Obama recently visited a Baltimore mosque to address the increasing threats against Muslims resulting from Islamic terrorist attacks in Paris and California. President Bush did the same after 9/11.
The Pope is asking “How do we protect Christians?” The President is asking “How do we protect Muslims?”
Here’s My Take: The answer lies in the Playboy illustration – “Love Ye One Another.” Until we can look at another person and see the face of the Holy – the invisible God in the visible person – we remain infidels with continuing wars our hopeless future.
